Thrill Me! The Valhalla Delivers 14 Hours of Cult Goodness
By: Craig Villinger on July 5, 2013 | Comments

Who wouldn't want to spend a day with cult figures like Jack Burton, Dr. Herbert West, the Gecko brothers, and thrill seeking Detective Ray Cameron?

Many years ago the Valhalla Cinema was arguably Melbourne's best venue for cult movie addicts, but while its former Westgarth home has become just another multiplex that plays the latest Hollywood blockbusters ad nauseam the old Valhalla spirit lives on and will be popping-up in different venues around town over the coming months in transportable community cinema form.

Promising to deliver more comfort and extra leg room in an intimate cinema environment that can be built up and pulled down in a matter of hours, The Valhalla Social Cinema has a number of exciting screenings on its calendar, the biggest of which will be a 14 hour horror/fantasy movie marathon on September 7 featuring some of the greatest cult movies ever made. You think we're exaggerating? Take a look at the full line-up!

  • Re-Animator (1985)

  • Big Trouble in Little China (1986)

  • The Fly (1986)

  • Night of the Creeps (1986)

  • An American Werewolf In London (1982)

  • REC (2007)

  • From Dusk Till Dawn (1996)

  • The Cabin In The Woods (2012)

No, we weren't exaggerating.

Where will this marathon be held? Well, part of The Valhalla Social Cinema's charm is that the venues are not announced until the days leading up to the screening, but they have told us the event will be held precisely 2km from Melbourne's CBD. Ticket holders will receive the venue name and address two days before marathon starts.

Tickets are limited to just 55 people, so if you want to be a part of this marathon we'd suggest you get in quick! Early bird tickets are just $49 if you book before August 1 and will include access to a luxurious deck chair (or bean bags in the first two rows) and a complimentary coffee on arrival, although organisers are advising patrons to bring their own pillow for extra comfort. Coffee, hot meals and affordable snacks will also be available at the venue.

Doors open at 9am, with the first film starting at 9.50am. The final pic will wrap before midnight.

Tickets will be on sale from 4pm this afternoon. For more information, and to book your tickets, visit the Valhalla Social Cinema website at

They're also doing the social networking thing on Facebook and Twitter.
