Jon Hewitt Prepares to Resurrect Turkey Shoot
By: Craig Villinger on May 19, 2013 | Comments

As we await the world premiere of Mark Hartley's Patrick remake at this year's Melbourne International Film Festival, word of another Ozploitation classic getting the make-over treatment has trickled down the internet newswire.

According to Screen Daily, director Jon Hewitt (of Bloodlust, Acolytes and X fame) will be sitting behind the camera for a remake of Turkey Shoot (also known as Blood Camp Thatcher and Escape 2000 in other parts of the world), a blood splattered dystopian yarn about a group of prisoners who are set loose and hunted for sport by a corrupt prison warden and his cronies.

Titled Turkey Shoot: Resurrected, the updated version will see Spartacus: War of the Damned's Liam McIntyre playing a disgraced Navy Seal who must fight for his life in a globally broadcast reality TV battle royale. Ozploitaion regular Antony I. Ginnane will be back on board to produce, with the director of the original Turkey Shoot Brian Trenchard-Smith serving as executive producer.

Interestingly, Ginnane was reportedly reconsidering the idea of remaking Turkey Shoot last year in the wake of The Hunger Games' success as he feared it could end up looking like "a cut-price Antipodean version" of the much more expensive franchise, but it now appears to be all systems go for the re-imagining which should begin filming in the latter stages of 2013.

For now, let us enjoy the original Turkey Shoot trailer as we ponder such questions as "Will a contemporary version feature a wolfman in a top hat?"
