Bloodrayne - Interview with Director Uwe Boll
By: Craig on January 4, 2006

Uwe Boll is at it again! The director of House of the Dead and Alone in the Dark is bringing another popular video game to the big screen, and legions of anti-Boll fanatics are already cracking their knuckles in anticipation as they prepare to launch another scathing cyber-attack on the man who might just be the most unappreciated Director in horror history.

This time around Boll is tackling Bloodrayne, the story of a wayward half human/half vampire called Rayne who uses her fierce bloodlust and unique abilities to wage war on the Undead in Romania, circa 1723. T3's Kristanna Loken stars as Rayne, along with an all-star cast including Ben Kingsley, Michelle Rodriguez, Michael Madsen, Meat Loaf, Billy Zane, Udo Kier, and Boll regular Will Sanderson.

Digital Retribution caught up with Boll as he prepared for the films US theatrical release (and the next wave of attacks from his most fervent detractors) to talk about the directors past, present, and future projects.

Digital Retribution: You've done House of the Dead, you've done Alone in the Dark, and now we have another video game to film adaptation in the form of Bloodrayne – what attracted you to this project?

Uwe Boll: I love Vampire movies and here was the chance to do one.

DR: Rayne is pretty sexy, at least as far as animated video game characters go. Was Kristanna Loken an obvious choice, or was the casting process more complicated?

UB: She was in my TOP 3 and she took the first offer. She loves this stuff and I was really happy with her. She is good with weapons and good on a horse.

DR: The Bloodrayne video game is loaded with blood, violence, and sexy women in tight clothing. Can we expect the same from your film version?

UB: Absolutely. It is a hard R RATED movie. Very gory, dark and disturbing.

DR: Did you have any hassles with the MPAA before receiving an R rating for the films US release?

UB: Yes. On DVD there will be even an NC-17 version.

DR: You've assembled a noteworthy cast for Bloodrayne, including Ben Kingsley. What was it like directing an Academy Award winning actor?

UB: Easy. He is perfect and a gentleman.

DR: Bloodrayne hasn't even been officially released, and yet you've almost finished work on your next picture already. What can we expect from In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale? Will this be similar to the horror/action style of your previous three video game adaptations?

UB: No. IN THE NAME OF THE KING is a big epic adventure.

DR: It has been reported that you'll be doing a Kill Bill on us and releasing it as two separate movies. Any truth to this?

UB: No. We changed the plans back to one long movie 145 Minutes and a 3 hours DVD version.

DR: New versions of House of the Dead and Alone in the Dark were announced recently as well. Can you tell us a bit more about them?

UB: On HOD 2 I was involved in the development. Not in the production. On ALONE I finished a harder Directors Cut - with more gore.

DR: Speaking of Alone in the Dark, the film has just been released on DVD here in Australia (December 28 through Eagle Entertainment). Can Aussie fans possibly sit down to watch the film with an open mind after the trashing it has received over the past twelve months?

UB: Hopefully. It is surprisingly good if you expect one of the worst movies of all times.

DR: Two constants we can always count on in an Uwe Boll film are lovely ladies and gratuitous violence, which is a great thing. As a fan, what qualities do you look for in a movie?

UB: I like brutal movies, intense music, and I do experiments with the camera, CGI and editing. Hopefully in 50 years people see that - that there was a lot of never seen stuff in HOUSE, ALONE etc.

DR: Horror and action seem to be your favourites as a director. What are your thoughts on the current crop of Hollywood horror and action flicks?

UB: I like SAW for example and see all the Horror Movies. I hate movies like STEALTH, ELECTRA, CATWOMAN....

DR: Will Uwe Boll ever go soft on us and produce a family friendly PG-13 horror flick?

UB: If I do Horror it will be R RATED. I never go in a PG 13 Horror Movie. This I prefer to see on DVD in fast forward.

DR: We all know you have a fascination with bringing video games to the big screen – but have you ever thought of directing - or even creating - a video game yourself?

UB: I got offers to do that - but I have no time.

DR: Far Cry is another video game to film adaptation you've talked about in the past. What is the current status of that project?

UB: We have a great script and planning 2007 to shoot.

DR: What else have you got planned for the future?

UB: POSTAL and my horror movie SEED (not based on a videogame). Both written by me. I have to go back to my roots now and write.

DR: Hollywood is remaking every horror film it can get its hands on at the moment. How would you feel if you walked past your local multiplex and saw a remake of an Uwe Boll film in twenty years time?

UB: HOD 2 gives me already a feeling like this. Lets wait and see.

DR: Are there any films you'd like to remake yourself?

UB: THE BIRDS

DR: So far you've avoided making movies within the Hollywood system, but it seems as though every foreign directory eventually ends up working in tinsel town at one time or another. Could we see Uwe Boll working in Hollywood at some stage in the future, or is it something you would prefer to avoid?

UB: It depends on with what people I should work

DR: Why does Will Sanderson appear in every one of your movies?

UB: He needs the money.

DR: House of the Dead and Alone in the Dark have earned you one of the most unenviable reputations of any director in the horror genre. How does it feel to see fans trashing yourself and your movies with such passion?

UB: Good. As long I know what I'm doing.

DR: Despite all this negativity you seem to have big name actors queuing up to be in your movies, and attracting investors obviously isn't a problem for now. Do people within the industry pay much attention to what's being said about you on the internet?

UB: I learn from it. There a critic you can learn from. And I changed stuff because of critics.

DR: And finally - with Bloodrayne about to hit theatres (in the USA), what kind of reaction are you expecting from the ant-Boll militia? Could the legions of internet fans possibly hate you any more, or is it all uphill from here?

UB: I hope they buy a ticket and see that BLOODRAYNE is a good movie.
